Zakat al-Fitrah

What is Fitrah/ Zakat Al Fitr?

Fitra, also known as fidyah or Sadaqatul-Fitr or Zakat Al-Fitr, is an Islamic term used to provide financial support to those in need. Fitra is often understood as a charitable act that helps fulfill one’s obligations to those less fortunate or disadvantaged. It is usually paid before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers; meanwhile, the minimum amount of Fitrana or Fitra per head is decided before Ramadan. All Muslims are responsible for paying a portion of their wealth to charity, and Fitrana or Zakat Al-Fitr is one way to fulfill this obligation. The amount of Fitra required varies depending on the individual’s circumstances. Still the Sadaqatul-Fitr, it is typically calculated based on the value of necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter. Fitra is typically paid at the time of the annual Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. It is also a time when people are encouraged to show kindness and generosity towards others, and Fitra is one way to do this. However, if a person fails to pay Fitra before the time of Eid-ul-Fitr prayers, then they should pay it at the earliest.
